Northeast Food For Schools: Cape Cod Poultry Connection

On Cape Cod, Nauset Regional School District and Cape Cod Regional Technical High School recently featured locally raised chicken from Hillside Poultry Farm (Truro, MA) on the menu.

This development was the product of significant planning between the school food service director, Susan Murray, and farmer Andrew Locke who also works in the nearby Truro schools. Several Cape Cod Schools, including  Nauset High School, Nauset Middle School, Brewster Elementary, Eastham Elementary, Orleans Elementary, Wellfleet Elementary and Cape Cod Regional Technical, are now serving local chicken from Hillside Poultry Farm on their Spring 2024 menus.

The district was able to purchase specific cuts for their students and the farm was able to sell the other chicken pieces through retail sales channels – a win for the farm, the students, and the local community! Susan Murray is thrilled to utilize federal nutrition dollars from the Northeast Food for Schools program with a Cape-based farmer.
