Call for Committee Members: Harvest of the Month Secondary Educator Advisors

About the Project

With support from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) and the USDA Specialty Crops Grant program, Massachusetts Farm to School is working to develop resources for the Harvest of the Month for Educators program. The material will be designed for secondary educators who wish to utilize the Harvest of the Month program, by offering them age appropriate and engaging curriculum materials that address critical subjects in Farm to School such as food systems, soil and composting, climate change, food justice, and hands-on work in school gardens for their students.

To this end, the Advisory Committee group will work collaboratively to:

  • Create quarterly material engaging for the secondary classroom
  • Create material that serves classrooms across many subject areas and offers a cross-discipline approach to Farm to School
  • Design and offer webinars aimed at an audience of secondary educators

Project Advisors

In order to ensure that the project meets the needs of the wide variety of school garden efforts across Massachusetts, we are building a paid, project advisory team to help guide the development of curriculum, training, and outreach. We seek a team of 3-5 individuals with experience or passion in farm to school subjects to serve as project advisors. The curriculum will focus on such topics as food systems, soil and composting, food and climate justice, and school garden activities. Project advisors must bring an equity lens to their work, ensuring that the materials are accessible to educators and students with diverse backgrounds.  We seek a team of advisors from different parts of Massachusetts who bring experience in both urban and non-urban settings.

Project Advisor Roles and Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in up to 8 virtual project team meetings in curriculum development and outreach strategies.
  • Create, review and offer feedback on curriculum
  • Be available for individual communication as needed to inform specific elements of the project as they arise.

Project Advisor Compensation

Project advisors will be paid a stipend of $1,000, payable in two increments, for their contributions to this project.  It is estimated that the total time commitment will be approximately 15-20 hours over an 8 month period from May until December 2022.
