On a handful of (mostly) sunny days in October, all 400+ kindergarten students at our five Worcester Kindergarten Initiative schools went on field trips to one of two local farms – either Clearview Farm in Sterling or Breezy Gardens in Leicester. Students experienced firsthand working, local farms—riding on hay wagons, picking their own sugar pumpkins, learning about how bees pollinate fruits and vegetables, meeting and learning about llamas, discovering what fresh popcorn looks and tastes like, and more.
After their farm visit, each classroom dehydrated or roasted pumpkin seeds and buttercup seeds to compare and contrast and to try out an easy, local fall snack! Each student got instructions on how to make pumpkin seeds at home from their own sugar pumpkins and a cool farmer trading card featuring info on the farm and farmers that they visited.
Be sure to check out our KI facebook page for more farm trip photos, as well as great shots from in-class taste-tests and other fun local food activities.
