The first ever Farm to School Day at the State House was held May 6, 2015. We had a packed room for the legislative briefing full of passionate farm to school advocates – legislators and aides, students, teachers, food service staff, non-profit leaders and more. You can access the Farm to School Day presentation here.
Many participants scheduled individual meetings with their local representatives to talk about why farm to school is important in their community. With strong presentations by student leaders and farm to school advocates, we know that the message about the power of farm to school programs to build healthy schools and healthy communities was clear.
Representatives Madden and Benson have introduced legislation to raise the profile of farm to school and support these critical programs. You can view Rep. Madden’s bill here and Rep. Benson’s bill here. If you haven’t yet shared your perspective on these bills with your elected representatives, we encourage you to do so. You can look up your legislators and their contact information here.
This Farm to School Day was a kickoff for what we hope will be a strong farm to school advocacy effort in the coming months and years. If you are interested in staying engaged in this work, we will be putting together a list of people who would like to contribute to future efforts. Please contact us at info@massfarmtoschool.org to let us know of your interest.
And as always, we want to hear from you about your policy priorities. What could help make farm to school stronger in your community? Please stay in touch!
